John Langton has been called the North’s Senior Painter. He was born in York in 1932, exhibited his first work in Leeds Art gallery in 1953 and since then has had over 100 exhibitions, many of them in Germany, most of them one man shows. He has work in many countries, in English museums, galleries and universities and has carried out commissions for H.M. Goverment and Granada T.V. (“University Challenge” prize). In 1978 he became the University of York’s Artist Fellow, and was awarded an Honorary Doctorate in 1995.

Last year he mounted a very successful show in York Minster, and at that time became inspired by the stained glass.
