In 2011, with just a week's notice we put on Said the Whale at the recommendation of Dan Mangan - it sold out instantly, and was one of the very best gigs we have held here.
Afterwards they said - "The house concert was amaaaaaaazing. We have to do this every time we're here." - but they then signed to a major label and management - started playing large venues throughout America to rave reviews - and we thought that it was just a one off.
But, true to their word, they are back... touring their new album, so do not miss this one - it is a no brainer !!
Said The Whale formed in 2007 as a collaboration between songwriters Ben Worcester and Tyler Bancroft, "nodding at times to the sea shanties of Neutral Milk Hotel and at others to the boat-shoe-gazing of Vampire Weekend" - The National Post. The band released their sophomore album "Islands Disappear" in late 2009 on Hidden Pony Records (Hannah Georgas, Imaginary Cities) in Canada.
Lead single from the album, Camilo (The Magician), was dubbed the “song of the summer” by Grant Lawrence of CBC Radio 3, and was one of the most-played Canadian song at Modern Rock Radio in Canada for 2010.
The band was awarded "New Group of the Year" at the 2011 JUNO Awards (the Canadian equivalent of the Brits).
The band’s first trip to the South By Southwest festival in Austin, Texas, in 2011, was documented in the CBC television special, Winning America, which will air nationally on March 12 2012.
